How to Prepare Ceremonial Cacao (Simple Step-by-Step Guide)
Our official guide to making the perfect cup of ceremonial-grade cacao
What Is Ceremonial Cacao Preparation?
There are endless ways to prepare ceremonial cacao, and every cacao drinker eventually finds their own ritual. This guide is our personal recommendation–after drinking thousands of cups of cacao over the years– for making the tastiest, creamiest cup of Alma ceremonial-grade cacao at home. Simple enough for beginners, delicious enough for daily drinkers.
It doesn’t matter if you’re enjoying it quietly before the day begins, sharing it in ceremony, or simply taking a mindful pause, we invite you to prepare your cacao with presence and intention.
What You Need to Make Ceremonial Cacao
- 250ml liquid (see below for ratios)
- 15-25g Alma Cacao for everyday enjoyment (or 1 Alma Scoop if using our hand-grated cacao)
- 35-42g Alma Cacao for the Ceremonial Experience
- Optional extras: honey, cinnamon, vanilla, a pinch of Celtic sea salt, chilli, or anything you love
Everyday blend: 100% plant-based milk (we love coconut milk for the richest, creamiest texture)
Special occasions or ceremony: Try our extra special 70:20:10 ratio — 70% coconut milk, 20% water, 10% coconut cream from the can for a silky-smooth treat.
Step-by-Step Guide to Preparing Ceremonial Cacao
1. Warm your liquid
Pour your chosen milk (or special occasion blend) into a small pan. Heat gently over a low to medium heat.
Important: never let it boil — high temperatures can damage cacao’s delicate fats, oils, and mood-lifting compounds. Keep it warm and steamy, but never bubbling.
2. Chop and add
Chop approx 25g from your cacao block (or measure 1 Alma Scoop of our hand-grated cacao). Sprink it to your warm liquid, stirring as you do.
Note on Dosages: You're free to choose your own dosage of cacao depending on what works for your and your intention behind your cup. For everyday routines and rituals we suggest between 15-25g of cacao. For a ceremonial-dose we typically suggest 35-42g of cacao when you want to go a little deeper.
If you’re new to cacao, sensitive to stimulants or just unsure about what’s right for you–take it slow and start small!
3. Stir with care
Gently stir with metal or wooden whisk until your cacao has fully melted into the milk and you cannot see any lumps.
Note: If you notice natural “fat blooms” on your cacao (the pale white markings that sometimes appear on your cacao block), don’t worry—they’re perfectly normal and have no impact on taste or potency.
They may just take a little extra love to melt and blend in–the perfect opportunity to bring a little extra intention and presence to the process.

4. Froth for creaminess
(optional, but highly recommended)
For that perfectly smooth and velvety finish we always use our handheld electric frother. It blends the cacao evenly every time and produces the lushest silky texture!
5. Flavour to taste
Add your favourite extras — maybe a drizzle of local/ natural honey, a dash of cinnamon, or a pinch of salt to enhance the chocolatey depth.
During our time in Mexico our cacao facilitators would often suggest adding chilli or cayenne pepper to the cacao–which vasodilates the blood vessels and can increase absorption rates of theobromine, anandamide and phenylethylamine into the bloodstream.
6. Sip with intention
Pour into your favourite cup, take a deep breath and breathe in the chocolatey aroma
Enjoy your cacao slowly. Whether you’re setting an intention, taking a mindful pause, or savouring the taste, let the moment be yours–and remember Alma means ‘soul’ in Spanish.
What Does Ceremonial Cacao Taste Like?
Firstly, cacao is not a sweet drink (unless you add something), and that’s the beauty of it.
Ceremonial cacao has a rich, earthy depth unlike anything you’ll find in mass-produced cocoa or chocolate. Its taste is bold, complex and completely unique —think deep dark chocolate with subtle notes of fruit, spice, and smoke, depending on the region and roast. This is cacao in its purest form, full of character, with a creamy texture that comes from its natural cacao butter—never removed or diluted.
You can prepare Alma Cacao to suit your personal preference for taste. Drinking it with only water will be a lot more of a strong and bitter taste than blending it with 50% oat or coconut milk (our favourite!) which produces a delicious smooth and creamy taste.
Our founder Craig prefers the sharp bitter taste and drinks his morning cacao with only hot water whereas Amy prefers the smooth creamy taste of coconut milk and honey blended for her morning ritual - so there really is no ‘right or wrong way’ – there’s only your way.
How to Adjust Cacao to Your Taste?
Ceremonial Cacao is naturally bitter as it is free from all sugars and sweeteners. The indigneous peoples of the Mayo-chinchipe, Olmecs, Mayans and Atzecs would have drank cacao blended with only water and they would have had very different taste palettes to ours today in the west.
Out advice would be to experiment with different ratios of plant milk and water until you get a taste and consistency that just feels right for you. It's fine to experiment and there is no 'one right way or wrong way'. The preparation recipe above is what we feel to be a good balance between taste and creaminess for the taste palettes of western europeans but PLEASE feel free to find the way that works best for you!
Tips for the Perfect Cup of Ceremonial Cacao
Preparing cacao is simple. A few small details make a noticeable difference to how it tastes and feels.
Use warm, not boiling water: Cacao is rich in natural fats and delicate compounds. Boiling water can dull both flavour and texture. Aim for hot, but not aggressive heat.
Start with less and adjust: Begin with a smaller amount of cacao and build up over time. This allows your body to adapt and helps you find the level that feels right for you.
Blend for a smoother texture: Cacao benefits from proper mixing. A handheld frother or blender helps create a smooth, creamy consistency rather than a grainy drink.
Keep it simple: Cacao has a naturally deep, complex flavour. You can add spices or natural sweeteners if you like, but it is worth experiencing it on its own first
Drink it slowly: This is not something to rush. Take your time with it. Let it settle into the body rather than treating it like a quick drink.
How to Use Cacao as a Daily Ritual
Cacao isn't just something that you drink. It can become a simple point of pause in your day. An anchor to ground you in the present moment in a world that is fiercely competing for your attention at every turn.
Start with intention: Before you drink, take a moment. It doesn't need to be anything elaborate. Just a brief check in with how you feel and what you need.
Create a consistent space: This could be first thing in the morning, a break in the afternoon, or a quiet moment in the evening. The consistency matters more than the timing. That way your body and nervous system will being to find a rhythm with cacao.
Keep it accessible: A ritual does not need to be complicated. A cup of cacao, a few slow breaths, and a moment of presence is enough. Not every cup need to be a ceremonial dose, drank it large elaborate circles and ceremonies. For the past 5000 years cacao has been drank in both contexts.
Let it support, not replace: Cacao is not a solution in itself. It works best alongside other practices that support your wellbeing. Think of it as something that helps you slow down and pay attention.
Return to it regularly: The effects of cacao are subtle but cumulative. Over time, it can become a steady anchor for calm, focus and connection.

FAQs
For us, what makes cacao truly ceremonial comes down to three essential qualities—purity, method of production, and intention. These are the soul of every bar we craft.
Purity means our cacao is 100% organic, single-origin, and free from additives or processing shortcuts. It contains nothing but whole cacao beans, hand-prepared in their most natural and potent form.
Method of Production speaks to how our cacao is made—using ancestral techniques passed down through generations. Each batch is fermented, roasted low and slow, and stone-ground by hand by an indigenous women’s collective in Guatemala. This process honours both the land and the spirit of the cacao, preserving its full nutritional, energetic and cultural integrity.
Intention is the invisible thread that ties it all together—both in how the cacao is made and how it’s meant to be consumed. From the care infused by the women who prepare it, to the mindful way it’s used in ritual, creativity or wellness, Alma Cacao is more than a product—it’s a practice. Sound a bit ‘woo-woo’? Trust us! Try it and feel the difference for yourself.
Alma Cacao is ceremonial cacao, made the right way.
Alma Cacao is 100% pure ceremonial-grade cacao, handmade in Guatemala using traditional methods that preserve its full nutritional and energetic integrity.
Supermarket cocoa powders are typically highly processed, chemically treated, and stripped of cacao’s beneficial fats and compounds. Theyre often treated and heated at high temperatures during the production process which breaks down a lot of the magical compounds which make cacao such a special superfood in the first place!
Unlike these products, our cacao retains 100% of its natural oils, minerals, and mood-enhancing compounds—offering a deep, rich flavour and a powerful, nourishing experience. We don’t view cacao as just another ingredient — We understand that cacao is an ancient tradition, a daily ritual, a functional superfood, and the opportunity for us to connect to something deeper in the everyday.

Every bar is handcrafted using traditional, time-honoured methods that preserve the full integrity of the bean and the traditions where these methods come from. These elements aren’t just good for you—they’re what give our cacao its signature velvety texture and deep, layered flavour.
Our cacao is made entirely by hand—harvested, peeled, and stone-ground by an indigenous women’s collective in Guatemala—ensuring every bar carries the care, skill and spirit of the people who make it. It’s cacao with a heartbeat.

There is no denying that Ceremonial-Grade Cacao holds the undisputed title of the Original Superfood with benefits for both body and mind. It’s packed with antioxidants, flavonoids and essential minerals (like magnesium and iron) that support heart and brain health and overall wellness.
It's the powerful combination of a trio of very special compounds which naturally occur in very high quantities only found in cacao. It is the potent combined relationship between Theobromine, Anandamide and Phenylethylamine working together to create a deeply nourishing mind-body experience which lies at the heart of Cacao’s unique effects as a superfood for the mind, body, heart and (spirit!).
Unlike coffee, cacao provides a gentle energy boost through theobromine, a mild stimulant that enhances focus and mood without the jitters or crash of caffeine. It also contains mood-elevating compounds such as anandamide and PEA (phenylethylamine). These are often called the “bliss” and “love” chemicals, known for promoting positive feelings, clarity, and stress relief. Many people find that enjoying pure cacao helps them feel more centered, uplifted, and connected.
We’re serious about the science-backed health benefits of ceremonial cacao and if you’re a cacao-science nerd like us then you can check our health benefits page for a deeper dive into the health science of this soulful superfood.
Alma Cacao contains no added caffeine, but it does contain a naturally occurring compound called theobromine – a gentle stimulant found in cacao that offers a sustained energy boost without the spikes and crashes of coffee.
Theobromine primarily stimulates the cardiovascular system (rather than the central nervous system like caffeine), making it less likely to cause jitteriness, anxiety or sleep disturbances. Many people find that cacao actually calms the nervous system while increasing focus and alertness. That said, everyone is different – if you're especially sensitive to stimulants, we recommend enjoying your cacao earlier in the day to see what works best for your body.
Every experience is unique – but most people describe ceremonial cacao as heart-opening, grounding, and gently uplifting. Thanks to its natural compounds like anandamide, PEA, and theobromine, cacao can create a sense of calm focus, lightness in the heart, and deeper emotional connection.
Cacao is non-psychoactive and is not a hallucinogen. It can create feelings of bliss and joy and openness depending on the dosage used.
You might feel more present, more creative, or simply more you. That’s why so many people use it to support meditation, journaling, deep work, or even just a mindful ritual to start their day. The best way to understand how cacao feels? Try it and see what it brings up for you.
Here you can place an explanation or answer to the question.
Not at all. Cacao can be used however it best serves you. For some, it’s a tool for emotional healing and spiritual connection. For others, it’s a nourishing daily ritual that supports energy, focus, and mood.
You don’t need to subscribe to any particular belief system to enjoy cacao. What matters most is that you approach it with presence, care, and respect—for the plant, for yourself, and for the people who grew and made it.
